Call for Participation: Finding Applications for Pyrolysis Aqueous Fraction

Biorizon co-initiator TNO is looking for partners to develop valorization options for pyrolysis aqueous fraction. This could take place in the framework of joint national/European funding projects or in bilateral collaboration with industry partners. In an initial phase, we could make available representative kg-scale samples to conduct a first assessment of a specific application potential.

Biorizon co-initiator TNO is developing relatively straightforward and cost-effective thermochemical depolymerization concepts for the valorisation of lignin and lignin-rich biomass via pyrolysis and staged condensation. Via this staged condensation, bio-aromatic fractions are being produced with a more narrow composition bandwidth than the original pyrolysis vapour leading to superior properties for particular applications. The conditions during pyrolysis, staged condensation condition and eventually fractions upgrading can be targeted to the demands of these applications.

In addition to the bio-aromatics-rich fractions, also an aqueous fraction is produced. This aqueous fraction still contains valuable (water-soluble) compounds such as phenols and C2-C3 oxygenates. This makes that various routes can be explored to valorize this fraction, which includes (amongst others):

  • Steam distillation to recover water-soluble phenols (e.g., catechol and guaiacol)
  • Recover other chemicals (e.g., C2-C3 oxygenates such as hydroxyacetaldehyde and acetol)
  • Direct (in-situ) production of CMA (calcium magnesium acetate: chlorine-free de-icing agent)
  • Application as a biopesticide (precursor)
  • Aerobic and/or anaerobic digestion towards energy applications via biogas

Joint application development

We are looking for partners to develop one of these, or other potentially attractive, valorization options. This could take place in the framework of joint national/European funding projects or in bilateral collaboration with industry partners. In an initial phase, we could make available representative kg-scale samples to conduct a first assessment of a specific application potential.
