Call for Participation: Jointly Developing Applications for Pyrolysis-Based Bio-Aromatics Fractions

Biorizon co-initiator TNO is ready to produce representative kg-scale samples and make them available for application development in close collaboration with industry. With different industry partners, joint development trajectories on several applications have been initiated already, including fuel additives, rubber additives, bitumen-modifiers and epoxy- and phenol-formaldehyde resins. Now, we would like to broaden the joint application work with industry to strengthen the business for pyrolysis-based bio-aromatics fractions and pave the way for demonstration and market introduction.

Biorizon co-initiator TNO is developing relatively straightforward and cost-effective thermochemical depolymerization concepts for the valorisation of lignin and lignin-rich biomass via pyrolysis and staged condensation. Via this staged condensation, bio-aromatic fractions are being produced with a more narrow composition bandwidth than the original pyrolysis vapour leading to superior properties for particular applications. The conditions during pyrolysis, staged condensation condition and eventually fractions upgrading can be targeted to the demands of these applications.

In a process development unit (PDU) of this so-called PYRENA-PYPO concept at the Green Chemistry Campus in Bergen op Zoom, this technology is further optimized and different biobased feedstocks are being tested, e.g., lignins, food processing residues, waste wood. In addition, this PDU allows the production of representative kg-scale samples of the bio-aromatic fractions.

Joint application development

After commissioning and initial optimization of the PDU, we are now ready to produce representative kg-scale samples and make them available for application development in close collaboration with industry. With different industry partners, joint development trajectories on several applications have been initiated already, including fuel additives, rubber additives, bitumen-modifiers and epoxy- and phenol-formaldehyde resins.

Now, we would like to broaden the joint application work with industry to strengthen the business for this technology and pave the way for demonstration and market introduction. This may concern the applications mentioned above, but may also be targeted towards other applications for which these bio-aromatic mixtures might be a suitable green alternative.
