Call for Participation: Hemicellulose Valorization via Furfural

Biorizon co-initiator TNO is looking for parties that are seeking to increase the valorization potential of their residual hemicellulose via versatile platform molecule furfural. TNO has the network, expertise, facilities and IP to realize this by converting hemicellulose into furfural, aligned with its upgrading to stable renewable building blocks. These buildings blocks have the potential of reducing the environmental footprint and improving user properties when used in applications such as coatings, resins, insulation foams, lubricants and surfactants.

High Value Through Versatile Platform Molecule Furfural

In the pursuit of a sustainable society, there is an increasing demand for renewable chemical building blocks. In addition, there is a growing availability of undervalued residual hemicellulose from established and upcoming biorefineries. Bringing agriculture and chemistry together, these locally abundant streams can be used to produce high-value renewable building blocks via versatile platform molecule furfural. This can be a key solution delivering the types of products that are increasingly in demand.

Call for Participation

With the aim to meet the increasing demand for renewable chemical building blocks and brining increased valorization potential for residual hemicellulose, we are looking for the following partners:

  • Biorefineries that are looking for improved valorization potential for their hemicellulose or furfural and would like to explore and collaborate on alignment of their production with upgrading into renewable building blocks;
  • Chemical manufacturers that would like to collaborate on technology development and align furfural production with furfural upgrading to renewable chemical building blocks that provide improved sustainability and functionality;
  • Other relevant partners like RTO’s or public entities that contribute to technology development.

Partners will have the opportunity to be involved from an early stage of this promising development, including the benefits of sharing knowledge and being at the forefront of application and commercial developments.
