Unique Lignin Oligomers for the Design of Tunable Polyurethane Bioresins
Biorizon co-initiator VITO has made considerable progress in the use of depolymerized lignin for application development. A recent scientific publication in ACS' Biomacromolecules shows that aldehyde-assisted fractionation (AAF) of lignocellulosic biomass, a defined process to depolymerize lignin from lignocellulosic feedstock, can be used for the creation of sustainable polyurethane with premium properties. Now, VITO will be able to process large amounts of lignin into depolymerized oil via their LignoValue Pilot Plant by the end of 2021.

Biorizon Annual Event 2020: The Virtual Edition
Please register for Biorizon's 7th Annual Event on Bio-Aromatics: 3 December. Over the past years, this event has developed itself into a 'must visit' event for anyone who's interested in renewable aromatics. Last edition attracted 156 participants from 14 countries that engaged in 180 matchmaking sessions and valued the event with an 8.3. Due to COVID-19 we decided to host this year's event online. By popular demand, we will still arrange virtual matchmaking sessions that can be scheduled as from now.

Exclusive: Lignin as Antioxidant - A Review
Biorizon co-initiator VITO provides exclusive access to a review of 'lignin as an antioxidant' that has not been published before. Adding lignin-based molecules to polymers increases the antioxidant activity of the blend without negatively affecting the mechanical properties of the product.

Vacancy: Biorizon spin-off Relement is looking for a CTO
During last year’s annual event, Roger Blokland announced the launch of Relement, a spin-off of from TNO activities within the Biorizon Shared Research Center. Relement develops, produces and sells specialty bio-aromatics to make paint better quality, lubricants more stable and insulation material stronger. Now, Relement is looking for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in Delft.

Polymer design and synthesis for sustainable epoxy resins
In the SELectiveLI project, Biorizon co-initiator VITO works on polymer design and synthesis for epoxy resins. VITO uses lignosulfonate-derived phenolic compounds and aldehydes as alternatives to maximally replace their oil-derived precursors. This contributes to a petrol-independent, sustainable bio-based industry in Europe.
