PILLAR: Towards unique pilot infrastructure for catalytic processing of wood and lignin
Biorizon co-initiator VITO is partner in the PILLAR project that aims to realise a unique pilot infrastructure platform. This platform for innovative catalytic biorefinery of lignin, wood and by extension any lignocellulosic material, will produce functional biobased aromatics. PILLAR provides technological and economic proof-of-concept data and paves the way towards an industrial scale catalytic biorefinery that transforms biomass into competitive chemicals and materials, resulting in a significant CO2 capture.

BAroC project started: Bio-Aromatic Conceptual Factory
Biorizon spin-off Relement started in May 2021 with the creation of a conceptual process design of the best commercial production route to bio-aromatics MPA and HMA. This conceptual design will be made in a consortium with Biorizon co-initiator TNO, Circular Biobased Delta and Catalok, funded by Topsector Energiesubsidie from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Biorizon spin-off Relement secures first capital investment
Biorizon spin-off Relement has raised its first capital investment from the TTT Smart Industries Fund that is managed by Innovation Industries, a leading deep-tech Venture Capital fund. Relement is uniquely positioned as a manufacturer of ingredients for coatings and materials, for which there is no renewable alternative today. The investment will enable Relement to contract partners for scaling up sample production for customers and strengthen technological development. An important milestone in the realisation of a more sustainable chemical industry.

Call for participation: provide hydrolysis lignin to test it in applications
Biorizon co-initiator VITO is looking for companies that own or produce hydrolysis lignin. Together with various scientists, VITO is keen to investigate the potential of this lignin by depolymerizing it and test it in applications, such as polymers, adhesives, coatings or composites.

LignoValue Pilot ready to be built: More than 30 interested companies
VITO, PMV and Worley Belgium have joined forces for the design and construction of a continuous pilot plant for the depolymerization of lignin into innovative biobased aromatics in Flanders. In the past months, Zeton has been working on the detailed engineering of this LignoValue Pilot. Most equipment is currently being constructed, enabling the start of the assembly of the pilot next June. More than 30 companies have expressed their interest in the project and the pilot installation.

Biorizon scientists publish novel, efficient routes toward bio-aromatics in Angewandte Chemie & Green Chemistry
We are proud that research by Biorizon’s lead scientist Marc Crockatt was recently published in the leading journals Angewandte Chemie and, together with Biorizon’s senior scientist Dr. Jan Kees van der Waal, Green Chemistry. Biorizon co-initiator TNO and Utrecht University have developed a more efficient way to convert biomass into industrially important bio-aromatics. Furthermore, they have demonstrated, for the first time, that furfural can be directly converted to bio-aromatics.
