John Ward’s research interests are in the use of bacteria their enzymes and phages to develop new chemicals, pathways and active entities for applications in synthetic biology, biocatalysis and host cell engineering for bioprocessing. John has developed the molecular biology and biochemistry to access many enzymes for biocatalysis including dioxygenases, transketolase, Baeyer-Villiger mono-oxygenases, cytochrome P450's, transaminases and synthetic plant enzymes such as norcoclaurine synthase. John is developing the de novo construction of biosynthetic pathways for chiral molecules such as plant alkaloids and using metagenomics to access novel enzymes and pathways from the microbiomes of various environments. The future inputs for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry need to move from non-renewable petrochemicals to sustainable materials such as plant biomass. The whole bioprocess from the physical, enzymic and chemical treatment to separate the biopolymers such as cellulose, hemicelluolose, pectin and protein through to the depolymerisation of the key polymers and the use of synthetic biology to create engineered pathways to make high value products is being tackled. In view of the finite nature of fossil resources, the growing demand for resources and climate change, the use of renewable raw materials has acquired great significance. The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes CBP in Leuna closes the gap between the pilot plant and industrial implementation. By making infrastructure and plants / miniplants available, the Fraunhofer CBP makes it possible for cooperation partners from research and industry to develop and scale processes for utilizing renewable raw materials up to an industrial scale. Thus the Fraunhofer CBP represents a hitherto unique platform for the development of new processes up to and including productrelevant dimensions, with a direct link to the chemical industry on the one hand and to Fraunhofer research on the other. The center provides modular process capacities up to 10 m3 plus a wide range of processing, treatment and reconditioning techniques. Focus is laid on the use of vegetable oils, the disintegration of lignocelluloses and the production of technical enzymes.

Twence produces raw materials and energy from waste flows and biomass. We contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, reintroducing raw materials to the cycle and reducing the use of fossil fuels. We extract raw materials from waste supplied by customers in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom Twence has seventeen shareholders and we are firmly rooted in the Twente region. With a turnover of EUR 100 million and more than 220 employees, Twence is a significant employer and economic motor in the region. We feel very strongly about sustainable business practices and we contribute to social projects concerning the development of the natural environment, environmental education and culture. Twence is by far the largest renewable energy generator in the province of Overijssel. Nationally we are also one of the largest generators of renewable energy. We improve our processes continually in order to make increasingly more waste materials suitable for recycling and we generate as much energy as possible from the residue. The synergy between our plants and the possibility of supplying steam and heat as well as electricity means that our energy efficiency is extremely high. Our ultimate goal is a zero waste society, with optimal reuse of goods and recovery of raw materials. Ultimately, energy has to come exclusively from renewable resources. Yet as long as any waste remains that cannot be reused or recycled, we will use that for the efficient production of energy. Figures We generate enough electricity to cover the needs of more than 75,000 households. In addition, Twence produced heat and steam equivalent to the heat consumption of around 57,000 households. This means that the energy produced by Twence is almost equivalent to the total energy consumption of all the households in the city of Enschede.

BiCHEM Technology has developed a technology to produce 2nd generation sugars and ligin from biomass. The technology is based on the superb cellulose dissolution proprties of zinc chloride hydrate under mild conditions. Using this cheap ionic liquid the cellulose and hemicellulose fraction of lignocellulosic biomass can be dissolved and further converted to oligomers or monosaccharides. Recently a novel separation method was developed and patented to separate these sugars very (cost) efficiently from the zinc chloride hydrate. AMIBM offers a unique approach covering the entire bio-based materials value chain, including raw materials (feedstock), polymers (materials) and the end products derived from them (technical and medical applications). In close collaboration with industrial partners, AMIBM hunts for novel materials starting from new biobased building blocks, and hosts experts in molecular biology, (bio) organic chemistry, polymerization, and materials physics. The institute performs research in the field of molecular biology into the biomass and focuses on new biobased materials along the value chain: synthesis of new Bio-Based Building Blocks, synthesis of materials with those Bio-Based Building Blocks Building Blocks and detecting/evaluating the unique functionality of the resulting materials. Research is done in molecular characterization, molecular modelling, polymer physics and polymer technology, including chemical modifications of polymeric materials, nanocomposites and improving thermo-mechanical and/or electrical properties. To develop new applications, AMIBM performs basic and applied research along with process, product and machine development in various fields of textile technology. Its core competences are the development of textile machinery and components, high performance fiber materials, manufacturing technologies and comprehensive process chains and the development of innovative textile based products.

The Multiphase and Reactive Flows group was founded in 2016, and is in fact a merger of two former groups; Combustion Technology and Process Technology. Research in the context of Biorizon is built on the premise that biomass cannot be wholly converted (NB at a profit!) to high value end products. Our research is focused on conversion (or direct use) of the resulting residual streams as low sulfur heavy fuel oil and octane boosters for large two stroke marine diesel and high performance gasoline engines, respectively.

United under the name 'Biobased Delta', entrepreneurs, knowledge institutes and government agencies strengthen the front runner position of the South West part of the Netherlands in the biobased economy. They work together across borders in several respects, not only between the various sectors in the Netherlands, but also with business professionals in Flanders, northern France and North Rhine-Westphalia. With the initiative REDEFINERY, a program of the Biobased Delta, a consortium of several national and international operating companies intends to realise and exploit an operating company to process raw materials from wood pellets. This operating company, with the working name BIOREFINERY, will process lignin and C5 and C6 sugars. Lignin is being used for energy supply, in future also as raw material for chemical processing.
